Tattoo Removal

Tattoo Removal

Though tattoos are designed to be permanent, laser tattoo removal works by breaking up the tattoo’s pigments with a high-intensity laser. This high-intensity light beam degrades the color of your tattoo with each pulse, while your body absorbs the pigment to reduce the appearance of your tattoo or remove it altogether.

Because it takes time for your body’s lymphatic system to absorb and eliminate your tattoo’s pigments, laser tattoo removal typically takes several sessions before your desired results can be achieved. Through this process, your unwanted tattoo will begin to fade over time.

HOW IS A tattoo removal PERFORMED?

How long it takes for your tattoo to fade completely depends entirely on the size of your tattoo and its pigments. Because black tattoo ink is able to absorb all laser wavelengths, it is thought to be easier to remove. If you have a brightly colored tattoo, or ink with multiple different pigments, it will likely take longer to fade and may even require various types of lasers to treat.

The easiest pigments for dermatologists to remove are black, dark blue, dark orange and red.

Tattoo pigments that may require more visits to remove include green, brown, light orange, purple, light blue, and yellow.

Before your treatment, Dr. Greeney will numb your skin to prepare for laser therapy. While laser tattoo removal varies from patient to patient, the pain should never feel unbearable. Your tattoo may look frosty after the first treatment, but it will soon fade gradually over the course of multiple sessions.

For the first 24 hours after your treatment, it’s important to ice the area on and off to reduce inflammation and redness. It’s perfectly normal to experience the following side effects following your laser tattoo removal treatments:

  • Swelling and inflammation
  • Redness
  • Blisters and bumps
  • Minor bruising
  • Burning
  • Overall discomfort

Because your skin will feel tender and exposed, make sure to rub a petrolatum jelly (Vaseline, Eucerin or Aquaphor) over your tattoo and cover it with a bandage during the healing process. Your skin will be extra sensitive during this time, so wearing sunblock when you go outside is crucial.
